I promise I'm not trying to turn this blog into a big debate station, but another thing happened today, and I'm curious what people think.
I was blow drying my hair at the Y and an elderly lady asked me to help her lift up the back of her swimsuit. I naturally helped and then she started to tell me why she was hurting. She was waiting at a red light to turn left. The light turned green, so she went through the intersection and can't believe she got hit. "The light was green! That means I can go! The cop gave me a ticket for $250 and told me that I had to wait for the intersection to clear." I think my jaw dropped slightly. She didn't think she'd have to wait for oncoming traffic to turn left without an arrow??? I know it is a serious thing to take away people's mobility, but at what point are they are danger to themselves and others?! Should someone who doesn't know to yield when turning left even have a driver's license?! Seriously scary.

It's amazing how many people have no idea what the laws are and how to drive correctly and safely! I think that it should be mandatory at some point to have to take the driving test again....I would hate to have to do this, but I think it would help people remember the laws. I mean, who remembers what happened when they were 16 anyway?
Gah! She is a menace to others! I was actually hit going through an intersection by a woman who ran a red light b/c she was on her CELL PHONE! People need to have their heads checked more often!
Yes, it's so hard when someone gets older and isn't quite up to driving anymore, although they think they are. It's a hard one to deal with when you're telling someone you love they can't drive anymore.
I have seen so many people make lefts in front of oncoming traffic because they don't want to wait. It is stupid and dangerous. They should get the ticket. They need more lights around here with turn arrows but come on.
I think it's finland where they have like 6 years worth of training before one can get a driver's license. Basically, you could be a stunt driver for a chase scene before you get your license there. We should improve our training system, and make the test more difficult, AND have people take the test once they reach a certain age...and have them keep re-taking it every so often thereafter.
Of course, it's not just age that affects driving. My sister in law is a baker so she works odd hours, which affects her sleeping patterns---she has totaled 2 cars in the last 6 months and both were her fault.
Don't you just love random elderly people conversations? That is scary.

I think that after 50 year of age they (the elderly) should take a defensive drive course, then every 7 years, the written test!!! I’m pro elderly! I really am! Ü
I fully agree with James and Lesley's comment. We have several elderly people in our family who are in the same boat (car...short bus?) as the lady at the Y. I'm terrified when I see blue hair behind the wheel! As sad as it is, I think revoking senior citizens' abilities to drive once they are beyond driving safely is a responsible and necessary precaution to society.
